The Jr. Spartan youth program was developed in an effort to instruct children in the areas of real-life self defense, while at the same time promoting health and fitness in a fun learning environment. Our instructors incorporate specific techniques in the areas of boxing, kick boxing, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, judo and wrestling, as well as general self defense.
Participation in class creates an environment in which children are able to expand key areas of social development. Our students are required to listen to instruction, be responsible for themselves and fellow classmates, and to be respectful both on and off the mat. Each student is an important member of our team. They are taught to encourage each other and learn from their mistakes. Each class is structured towards building each of the following character traits:
• Self Esteem
Studies show that the number of overweight children and teens has more than tripled since the 1980’s, and that an additional 15% of kids and teens are considered "at risk" for becoming overweight. The Center for Disease Control and other organizations recommend that children participate in physical activity a minimum of an hour daily. Physical activity has been associated with increased academic performance, self-concept, mood, and mental health. The promotion of physical activity and exercise may also improve quality of life.
Over the years, state requirements for daily physical education have eroded, and today no states currently have such a requirement. More than a third of young people in grades 9-12 do not regularly engage in vigorous-intensity physical activity. The Jr. Spartans program was developed in an effort to counteract these trends by encouraging our students to maintain a healthful life style, stay fit, and to develop the habit and desire to be physically active on a daily basis.
Although the study of the Martial Arts and Self Defense techniques are the primary focus of the Jr. Spartans program, many of the drills and activities that we incorporate are geared towards building on, and improving overall athletic ability. The drills and exercises that we utilize in our program are helpful cross-training tools that can be applied to any other sport. Our classes will help to improve and develop:
• Cardiovascular endurance
